What Does Green Mean? | Print |  E-mail

Welcome to the world of Green!

Alive, Refreshing and Healthy living are the thoughts that come to mind when I ponder the meaning of Green.

It is said there is nobody converted like the newly converted and that would describe me. In my recent certification as an EcoBroker I have learned a tremendous amount about the changes in how we use our resources to improve our lives. The awareness is increasing and changes are taking place across the United States and around the world.

Some key trigger words you will hear in the Go Green movement are: Energy efficiency, energy savings, renewable energy, Energy Star Certified and Earth Advantage Homes.

You will read and hear about alternative fuels, renewable resources, and recycling, recyclable materials.

There will be phrases such as Energy trust of Oregon with its' energy tax incentives, energy tax credits, energy rebates, energy efficient mortgages, Green mortgages and Green housing.

Indoor air quality, low VOC paint, Recycled carpet, bamboo flooring, low formaldehyde glues, air filtration systems, hybrid heating and air conditioning, and  energy efficient appliances.

And the list goes on.

What is a Building Contractor to Do? | Print |  E-mail

By Don McCoy Earth Advantage S.T.A.R./EcoBroker®

Our Southern Oregon Multi Listing Service has added 3 green certifications to the Sellers listing paper work. True story! This shows a serious and eventful mile stone in our communities' history of going green and our commitment to the future. The certifications will be for newly constructed Energy Star, Earth Advantage and LEED-H homes.

It is a great beginning and adds credibility to the effort to get the information out about the incentives for building green and sustainable homes. This starting point will prove easy in training Realtors on the differences and in the ability for the Home Owner show proof or verification that there is third party certification for their home. There is no reason to overwhelm the uneducated with a long list of green features and language that is foreign to the Realtor®.

Building Science Technologies and Green Building are on the center stage of attention and a new act is playing in the way we're building homes.  Put down the hammer and saw and pick up the drill.  Get over the "I am a friend of the lumber industry" mantra and know that lumber, like horses will always be around, especially when we start applying different materials to building homes. The winds of change are upon us and necessarily so.

Oh, the horses part? Since we found new ways to get around with out using horses we will find more important leisurely and significant uses for lumber as we change our choice of materials in building houses. As the Blacksmith looked up to see what was making that sputtering and rumbling noise while he was unknowingly hammering out the last of his horse shoes he may have quickly adjusted to selling tires and fixing them instead. Or he just turned away muttering to him self that horseless carriages had no future.

Do Green Features Add "Green" to Your Property Value? | Print |  E-mail

Adding livability to any home and reducing a structure's carbon footprint are obvious reasons for going green on upgrades and remodels.

With the economy and real estate market in a funk, however, most homeowners are most likely to opt for eco-friendly home improvements that result in substantial — and instant — cost savings or boost resale value.

Green Building Movement Taking Hold Locally | Print |  E-mail
David Smigelski

Green products were once considered a fringe market, but times have changed. Green—meaning eco-status, not color—has entered the mainstream in a big way, because consumers in all walks of life are demanding products that save energy, promote sustainability and don’t destroy the environment.

Nowhere is this movement more apparent than the homebuilding industry.
